What is City Jet?
City Jet is the leading airline in Europe. With its headquarters based in Dublin, Ireland, City Jet operates a fleet of aircraft across the continent. City Jet was established in 1933 by Pat Byme, an entrepreneur. In 1996, a partnership was formed between City Jet and Air France before the latter took full control over City Jet in 2000. Since then, City Jet has seen significant growth in its operation network. Under this new ownership, City Jet aims at providing the best services and prides itself in having the most qualified personnel to achieve this feat. City Jet also takes pride in playing part in expanding and developing Europe’s aviation. The airline initially offered scheduled passenger services but this changed in 2017. It now deals with wet-leasing aircraft and charter flights only.
How does it work?
Booking
There are three types of booking classes offered by City Jet. These are CityValue, CityFlex, and CityPremium. Any bookings made by City Jet a passenger is made available at Goibibo.com
Checking in
Passengers may check-in online or at the airport. Checking online should be done at least 48 hours before the scheduled flight. This can be done via their website. Checking in at the airport should be between 15 minutes to 48 hours before the scheduled flight, depending on your destination. To add to, there is a self-service kiosk located in London City Airport as well as Amsterdam Airport where passengers can alternatively check-in faster. The online check-in process involves the following steps:
- Search City Jet website and click City Jet web check-in.
- Fill in the required details for instance your name and the flight number
- Choose the seat you will occupy then click “confirm”
- Your boarding pass will be sent to your email/ displayed on your screen. This can then be printed.
Online checking holds an advantage over checking in at the airport in that it is time-saving
Baggage
- Carry-on Baggage
City Jet’s carry-on baggage allowance allows passengers to take a single carry-on baggage item along with another small item, for instance, a laptop. The sum total weight for the baggage should not exceed 12kg. Furthermore, the different types of aircraft vary in the load dimensions allowed. The AVRO RJ85 and Embraer E195 aircraft have a 55 x 25 x 35 cm dimension limit whereas the ATR aircraft has a carry-on baggage dimension limit of 47.5 x 35 x 20 cm.
2. Checked Baggage
The allowance for this on all City Jet flights is a 20kg bag. This applies to all passengers except infants, who have an allowance of one 10kg bag. In addition to this, infants have an allowance of one pushchair.
N.B: Customers can save up to 30% of the total charges when they purchase additional luggage online(registered) by applying a form found on City Jet’s website.
Services offered by City Jet
City Jet offers services that you may have already taken advantage of as an air traveler, using another service provider. Here’s what you can expect when onboard City Jet’s private aircraft:
- Free catering services- Refreshments and snacks are served for free to all passengers during the flight, regardless of their class, according to their requests. This also includes drinks such as wine and cocktails.
- City Jet aircraft have a carrier that makes it possible to use and work on electronic devices onboard (in flight mode). There is also an on-board magazine called Velocity placed neatly at the back of each seat which passengers can read throughout the flight.
- Empty leg flights: These are private charter flights that lack passengers on their return journeys between one airport and another. Different circumstances can cause empty legs flight, for instance when the aircraft returns from the manufacturer after servicing. Generally, the more frequent the flight requests you send, the more the probability that you’ll find a suitable empty leg. According to its website, City Jet offers discountable empty legs flights.
Is City Jet Reliable or Not Reliable?
In my opinion, City Jet is a reliable airline provider that aims at providing the quality services it has listed on its website. In 2018, it was christened the award of Best Regional Airline. It’s also a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), a widely recognized organization that comprises 290 airlines (82% of all the air traffic). Ratings by customers about City Jet are also high and positive, proving that City Jet delivers the quality services it claims to offer. Therefore, if it’s a question concerning genuineness, there’s little to doubt about City Jet. Of concern, however, is its failure to regularly update its official website. As much as this might seem like a minor error, it might cause grave inconveniences to some customers, especially where charges and fees are involved.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Cost-effective charter flights to individuals.
- Relaxing journey due to comfortable seats. Seats in the Business Class are designed to cushion and provide more comfort. The seats have leather arms and are spacious thus accommodating good positioning of a passenger’s legs.
- As part of their services, the City Jet carrier has a private check-in desk and, in some cases, a personal terminal as well.
- Empty leg flights.
- Paid care services for minors traveling.
- Decent choices of fresh meals are made available by the airline during the flight.
Cons
- Pets, whether in the hold or in the cabin, are not allowed on-board especially on flights to Ireland and to Great Britain. This is with an exception to service dogs, which should travel when properly harnessed, in cabins and accompanied by a passenger on whom they depend on.
- City Jets offers services within Europe only hence limited destinations.
- City Jet lacks an up-to-date, well-detailed website
- Meals and some types of beverages are not free thus passengers have to buy them.
- City Jet aircraft lack an in-flight entertainment system.
Final Words and Verdict
Verdict: Legit
Overall Rating: (3.7 / 5)
City Jet’s services are needed in today’s world, where more people have embraced private air travel as a better alternative to the highly restrictive public air transport. I think this company has managed to established a functional business that’s already moving in the right direction. As much as it does not have very outstanding and competitive offers, it’s still doing a decent job of making private air travel an affordable reality to those who need it. Looking forward to traveling in the near future? Have a look at the recommended alternative to City Jet, below:
